Today I want to propose a shift in how you use your time as a business owner. Yes, I know that your to-do list is a mile long…but if you look at what you’re working on, you may realize that it’s not that you don’t have enough time, it’s that you’re simply spending your valuable time on the wrong things.
If you want to scale your business, you can start by using your time differently. How? By creating uninterrupted blocks of time where you will focus on Exponential Growth Activities (EGA’s) – or as we call them in our program, “EGA Days”.
EGA’s are worth far more in the long-term of your business than anything else – but those are usually the things that you ‘don’t have time for’, or that you push off to the back burner. As business owners, we should be focused on doing these important things, but we find that our calendar is full dealing with what’s urgent (or Non-Exponential Growth Activities, N-EGA’s).
You may have noticed that it’s nearly impossible to build your business exponentially in between client appointments, putting out fires, managing employee turnover, or sending emails.
These kinds of tasks require a totally different type of thinking than the expansive, future-thinking, strategic aspect of exponentially growing your business.
But when we focus on the EGA’s? Let me tell you what happened for me the first year:
About five years into my business, I started carving out a specific EGA day in my calendar each week. It increased my revenues by 35% in 12 months and it was one of the only things I did differently.
Of course, using those days, I created many things, but this was a game-changer for me. I continued doing this and at one point I had two EGA days, Mondays and Fridays. That’s when I experienced a 300% increase in my revenues in 12 months.
Ultimately I created a 530% increase over a span of three years. And that’s when Inc. magazine named my company one of America’s fastest growing private companies. I share this with you solely to show you just how powerful of a concept this is.
So how do you start making space for the important things (EGA’s) that you, the business owner and visionary, need to focus on?
Create non-negotiable EGA days
- Create uninterrupted blocks of time (not between client appointments) so that you can focus for hours at a time on exponential growth activities, where you put a pause button on everything else.
- You will have to say to the world, to your family, to your clients, to your team, “Do not disturb me, please.” (I know this might be difficult, but setting and keeping this boundary is crucial.)
- Start with one non-negotiable EGA day each week – a full day to work on the big things that you never get the time to do. (If you can’t do a full day, take a couple of hours in the morning, two half days, or time on a Saturday, as long as you get 8-9 hours of uninterrupted time each week.)
- Commit to it and you’ll have 50+ EGA Days per year!
Seems pretty simple, right? Ok, let’s talk about the things that will inevitably get in the way.
Ask yourself, “What are some of the current obstacles that might exist to me setting up an EGA day and sticking with it?”
Maybe you have client deadlines every day, or other distractions like emails, social media, texts, laundry…perhaps you’re ‘getting ready to get ready’ and don’t know where to start, and have nothing keeping you on track or focused?
Maybe you need some more support, or the team doesn’t respect your boundaries, they’re calling and asking for things, or maybe others don’t take this time seriously, or your clients hijack it, or an organization you’re a part of interrupts you with requests or demands?
Maybe you’re being interrupted during your work day by your spouse, the kids? Any other obligations?
It’s time to set some strong boundaries and show up differently for your business, do what you can to FOCUS during work hours, and then shut things down at the end of your workday.
You may feel like there’s no light at the end of the tunnel, but that’s not necessarily true.
There’s nothing that can’t be overcome, right? You can find a solution to this; we know it from watching thousands of other entrepreneurs just like you.
If you don’t know where to start (or what your EGA’s would even be), if you’re feeling overwhelmed or are having a hard time holding yourself accountable or keeping your boundaries, that’s why we’re here. Let’s talk.
