When I first started my business, I tried to do everything like other people were doing it. I modeled them, acting the way they acted in marketing, even dressed like them. I put on a mask to fit in and grow the business…and it kinda worked.
Until I decided to just be ME, all the way, even if it didn’t resemble what others were doing anymore.
And that’s when I found that, the more I was myself – authentic, vulnerable, kind, compassionate, generous, emotive, spiritual, fiercely loving – THAT is when I made a mark on my industry.

Start with what you love and make that part of the experience that all clients have with you.
You may be able to name what you love a bit more easily than what is unique or special about you, yes? Whether it’s music, travel, cooking, dancing, movies, or qualities like a good sense of humor, loving kindness or attentiveness, it’s all worth including.
These things you enjoy make up who YOU and your persona are and you can use this to differentiate yourself in the marketplace so much that you become untouchable, in the best way possible.
How does that impact the growth of your business?
When you create an experience for your clients that is infused with the things YOU love, chances are that others are going to be inspired by your passion and enthusiasm, they will likely enjoy them too, relate and feel like they’re a part of something really special.
If you think about why you like a particular business, chances are it’s not necessarily about their particular product or service – it’s about the experience they provide you.
Truly differentiated businesses don’t provide commodities. They don’t try to compete with price. They provide memorable, meaningful experiences. And customers will usually choose where they feel the happiest – not necessarily where they get the best product, if all things are about equal.
Think about companies like Disney, Starbucks, or Virgin Airlines (a personal favorite). When a service is personal, enjoyable, entertaining and memorable, it becomes an experience that’s completely unique.
And when you provide that, people sense your passion. We can all feel when a business is based on passion.
So to differentiate your own business, move people’s emotions.
To do that, infuse your business culture with the highest expression of who you really are.
And the best part of this? The experience your business provides can be scaled, even without you there.
