Today I’d like to ask you to think about what’s meaningful for you as a consumer when you choose what businesses you are loyal to…the ones you go back to again and again.

We all know what it’s like to have a favorite restaurant, grocery store, or coffee shop we prefer over all others. We look for a specific brand name in a new store, or for a business we recognize when we’re in a new city, mall or airport.

In each case, we’re looking to get that “thing” we rely on them for. We’ve chosen that business as the one we will go to again and again, without question. The good news is that your business can become the same for your clients and customers, where they will stop looking elsewhere and just choose you again and again, for years to come.

Think about the businesses that you are impressed by, have continually chosen above all others in their category…places that you have given a monopoly, if you will. I’m going to bet this is the reason why:

The businesses that make you not only happy, but extremely loyal, do so because of the small touches that other businesses in that same industry ignore altogether.

Again, it’s all about the little things. 

I want to tell you a story about a simple Trattoria in a strip mall in Stamford, Connecticut.

As you can tell from the picture, Café Silvium looks simple on the outside. It’s in a brick building on a very busy street and there is always a line. It is difficult to get a reservation at the last minute, even if it’s a simple establishment. People sometimes wait to get a table for half an hour, 45 minutes, gladly waiting to get into Café Silvium. The restaurants next door are empty.

Why is this?

Well, I believe it’s because when you walk into Café Silvium, (this is what always happens to us) people call you by name with the biggest smile, clearly happy to see you.

“Hey, it’s the Fredricksons!” we’d hear from Fernando, the smiling waiter who has been there for years. And it wasn’t just him. Everybody recognized us and greeted us with a big smile.

The food is good, but we weren’t really judging it on the food; every entree is about $20. The wines are good enough. But really, it’s about how they make you feel.

When you walk in, you feel like you’re at home. And at the end of the meal, Fernando comes over and quietly offers you some Limoncello, on the house.

He doesn’t do this with grand gestures, it’s really just between you and him, and this makes you feel just like you’re part of the family.

For years, when we lived in the US, we made this restaurant our regular Wednesday date night place, because of their “secret sauce” – the little things they did made us feel appreciated, special, and part of something.

What about you?

Think about businesses like that in your life, where you say to yourself (or decide automatically), “If I’m going on a date, or if I’m going to get a haircut, or if I’m going to find just the right thing I need for this home improvement project, I will always use that particular business.”

=> What – specifically – do they give you that you don’t get elsewhere?

Take some time to think about the things that really “wow” you and keep you going back there. What could you do in your own business to do the same for your own clients or customers?

This is your “secret sauce”, your point of differentiation…and it can be leveraged into a multiple 6- and even 7-figure business (our secret sauce is Community).
