The fear of being copied

I was recently talking to one of our members about putting her amazing content out in the world in a much, much bigger way, so that she could become an expert in her marketplace. I could feel some resistance happening, and she said…

“What if somebody steals my stuff?”

Has this fear come up for you, too?

Today, we’re going to talk about the fear of being copied. And I’m going to tell you the same story I told her, how someone stole my stuff many years ago, and what I did about it, to inspire you in your own business. Watch this:

Ok, here’s what happened… In the first few years of my business, I started out coaching clients one-on-one about how to get clients.

After a while, I started thinking…

“I can’t help more people because I’ve got no more time in the day, and no more of me to go around. So I’m going to take all my intellectual property and I’m going to put it in a training program, and sell it to people.”

I ended up doing exactly that. It was called the The Leveraged Business System, and it sold like crazy for many, many years. It’s helped thousands of people grow their businesses.

At first, I was a little hesitant about putting all of my intellectual property out there. I really was. But I knew that not doing so would prevent others from growing their businesses. So I did it anyway.

Then one day, a client of mine called to tell me about a woman who had ripped off my entire The Leveraged Business System, and was selling it as her own.

Her “system” had the exact same 10 steps as mine did.

She had swiped all my marketing materials, copied my story, the one I’ve told thousands of times.

She ripped me off completely and this blindsided me.

I thought, “How could somebody stoop so low? Does she have no creativity, no imagination, no experience of her own?” I was so angry.

I reached out to her and asked what she was doing, and she completely denied it, saying she had no idea who I was.

Our lawyers weren’t getting anywhere, until I got the divine download to check my receipts folder in my email. And lo and behold, she had indeed bought the The Leveraged Business System and she knew exactly what she was doing. When the truth came out, her lawyer dropped her like a hot potato and she stopped using my stuff as her own, knowing I could “take her to the cleaners” as the expression goes.

For a while after this incident, I was really hesitant to put really good content out there because I was scared that people would rip it off.

Of course you can sue people for that, and I have, but I also started looking for the spiritual message in all of it.

The realization I got is this:

“If I’m THAT copyable… I’m simply not innovating enough. I’m resting on my laurels and just using the same content that I’ve had for years.”

This really spurred me into action around becoming a thought leader in a particular niche. To be continually innovating, updating, moving the thought leadership forward.

The reason I’m sharing this with you is because I meet so many people who hold themselves back around giving really good information because they think somebody is going to rip it off.

And the answer is…they just might.

But you want to ask yourself, “Am I here to live life playing small and in fear?”

Or, are you here to change the world in your own way? With your content, with your process, with your methodology?

Really think about your thought leadership, even if you’re just starting out.

I invite you to just keep creating amazing content.

Be so prolific that people can’t not pay attention.

This is how I’ve built my business to multiple seven figures for the past 10 years (and how I help others do so, even if they’re just interested in making 10K a month consistently.)

Go out there in a bigger way, Okay?
