Self-Accountability: How to do more and procrastinate less

Self-Accountability is how you do more in your business and procrastinate less.

As entrepreneurs, we’re (mostly) all guilty of starting new things with a burst of energy, but struggling to see them through.

I get it. That’s how I’m wired, and it’s likely how you are too.

But, as I’m sure you know, conquering the procrastination monster is crucial to supercharging your business productivity and truly reaching your goals.

My solution? Self-accountability

First, I want to acknowledge that there’s nothing wrong with you for finding it easier to start projects than to finish them. If you’re like me, you’re a creative and a high idea generator, thriving on vision and constantly brewing new ideas.

The thing is, being great at everything is a superhero-level expectation. You’re not supposed to be a master of all trades.

With that being said, if you understand that you are somebody who loves to start new things but doesn’t finish them, one of the things you might want to do is get yourself some form of accountability partner. 

What is a self-accountability partner?

By a self-accountability partner I mean a friend, fellow business owner, or really just anyone who would be willing to sit on Zoom with you keeping you accountable for completing tasks and projects.

Think of this person as your trusted sidekick in the battle against unfinished projects, helping you navigate your growth journey. Much like setting up playdates for children, scheduling Zoom ‘play dates’ for focused work sessions can really help you stay on track.

You could also invest in your success by literally hiring someone to hold you accountable – think of it as a sort of accountability coach.

In the past, I literally paid someone to hold me accountable for finishing things, who I would pay to sit on a Zoom with me and just be present until I finished a project.

Having someone waiting patiently and guiding you to completion of a project adds a layer of commitment that is immensely helpful in assuring you finish the tasks you start.

You can also consider joining a community of entrepreneurs that has an accountability focus, program, or group with things like daily check-ins, collaborative sprints, or opportunities to share advice.

Trust me, this could be a game-changer for your productivity. Having a support system of like-minded people who are in the same boat as you will allow you to motivate each other and keep each other in check until you reach your goals.

Leveraging your strengths

Basically, self-accountability is crucial. It’s about looking at what you need to do to finish the things that you’ve started. 

You’re immensely creative and hard-working, but even powerhouses need structure. Allowing yourself and giving yourself permission to create that structure that you need will be so beneficial in the journey towards cracking the code of entrepreneurial accountability.

Finishing projects isn’t about tackling everything on your own. It’s important to leverage your strengths and acknowledge where you thrive, and to allow yourself to bring in help in the areas that aren’t your unique strengths.

This isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing less, better. Once you implement self-accountability, you will see the powerful changes it can make to your productivity, and ultimately, your business.
