Today I want to share the story of how I went about reaching my goal of one million in revenue in one year for the first time…almost 15 years ago now, and multiple 7-figures ever since, by using this very process. I hope this is useful for you and that you get inspired to implement it with us.

To get you started on the right foot, I want to have you consider putting together a very specific forecast for the following year, like I did (you can read about that in this recent blog post). Doing this helped me to get really clear on what was required to get there, and probably most importantly, to believe it was possible.

Once I could see it on paper, I could believe that I could actually do it…but I also knew that I would need help to get it done.

When I finished my forecast, I reached out to my team and said, “I need you to help me map this out over two days.”

On day one, I said, “Here’s the goal: to reach a million. And this is how we are going to do it.” 

In person, we talked about my forecasting sheet and looked at all the different aspects of what was needed, then created a big to-do list.

Day two is when I said, “Now let’s make it real by creating an actionable plan that can be measured.”

Using a year-at-a-glance calendar and sticky notes, we started putting different things on different days. We scheduled every aspect of the marketing, every aspect of a product creation and put them on sticky notes on the calendar, moving them around until it all fit.

We reverse-engineered the million-dollar-plan by starting with the end in mind and going backwards to create the plan.

Of course you can do it on the computer in your project management software, but the key is that it’s easier to do this when you are with people who are good at planning, lists and processes, especially if you’re more creative and visual.

Just be sure to pick a day for your live planning session right away, then commit to finishing your forecasting sheet – maybe three weeks from now, three months from now, whatever it is, as long as it gets scheduled. That way, you’ll also have a deadline to get your forecasting sheet done.
