Today I want to address the topic of marketing. In my experience, the best, most effective marketing is a gift that you give to your prospects and future clients. A gift of love, of understanding, of “I see you.” It is a gift of encouragement and kindness.
I know that that’s not how most people do marketing, which is why I really want to talk about this!
As you may know, Simon Sinek wrote a book called Start with Why, and if you haven’t read it yet, here’s one of the big premises of the book: The Golden Circle. There are three circles: the outer one is the WHAT, the middle one is the HOW and the most important one in the center is the WHY. Here’s how he defines each one:
WHAT
“Every organization on the planet knows WHAT they do. These are the products they sell, or the services they offer.”
HOW
“Some organizations know HOW they do it. These are the things that make them special or set them apart from their competition.”
WHY
“Very few organizations know WHY they do what they do. WHY is not about making money. That’s a result. WHY is a purpose, cause or belief. It’s the very reason your organization exists.”
It’s not just what you do, it’s how you do it…but most importantly, WHY you do it.
I think about my WHY a lot, every day in fact. It’s the reason I get out of bed and do what I do:
I deeply believe that when a woman (especially) makes her own money and lots of it, she feels financially secure. And when she has that financial security, she feels safe in the world. She feels safe to speak up. She feels safe to take up more room. She feels safe to just be in the world. For me, her freedom not only matters, but it can truly change the world around her.
So in every marketing communication, I am looking to encourage her to make her own money, encourage and inspire her to take up more space, to feel more valuable, to feel loved, validated, to feel like she can do it. I am talking to her in everything I put out there…which means that my marketing is, in essence, a kind of love letter.
I want to show you another love letter, and this is one for a totally different target audience, but this is one that inspires me greatly. Watch this incredible commercial now:
Do you feel the emotion in that…truck commercial?
Yes, it is marketing. Yes, they are selling trucks, but there is soul in there. That is love, in that the target feels understood and valued…and it’s very powerful when you can write a love letter like this, truly validating who your target audience is.
You can see not only from the number of views it has, but also by the comments (several that mention grown men being brought to tears if they or their families were farmers) that it has a powerful effect on almost anyone who watches it.
So take out your journal and spend some time today thinking about your Why:
- What is your WHY?
- Who do you want to be a hero to?
- How do you want to make an impact in people’s lives?
