How to Build Your List with Article Marketing

In today’s video strategy we’re talking about building your list with article marketing. Article marketing is actually one of hundreds of marketing strategies for driving traffic to your website so that you can build your list. It’s a strategy that really works and yet it’s not something that a lot of entrepreneurs are talking about or know about.

Article marketing is quite simple. It’s the process by which you take your content, preferably pre-existing content from your blog or from your website, and you submit it to article directories on the web. Article directories are basically websites where you post your content so people can find you on the Internet.  Pretty simple. (Click here to tweet this.)

When someone does a search for a particular phrase on Google, for example, your website may not come up right away, but your article will if it refers to what they searched for. This is a great way to attract new people to you who would be interested in your content and ultimately what you have to offer.

Once you submit your content, you can categorize it based on the topic, keywords and the message you’re looking to share. You can even do things like set up an author profile with a bio, picture and links back to your website.

When you submit your content to several article directories, I recommend you do it on a consistent basis and not as a one-time-only thing. This will increase your exposure and ultimately your visibility in a huge way. It’s a great way to grow your platform and drive more targeted traffic back to your website to get a free gift from you, preferably what we at ClientAttraction.com call your Irresistible Free Offer, and then they can be added to your email subscriber list.

Your IFO can be a free report, a free checklist, a free video, a free audio or a free CD.  You have to give them something. When they sign up for your free offer they also get subscribed to your email list so that you can continue to give them great content and stay in touch with them. This is where the power of article marketing goes on overdrive – by driving traffic back to your site and at the same time converting those leads onto your list using your website.

The potential reach from article marketing is massive when you think about the number of new people who are out there searching for your content. They just don’t know about you or your website yet. It’s all about getting that out there.

The best part is you don’t have to go out and create more content to get this type of exposure and traffic. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel. We actually recommend that you use content that you’ve already created. Perhaps it’s an article that you’ve written in the past or a section of a book that you’ve written or any number of other pre-written content. That’s what we call recycling in the world of client attraction. It creates less work for you.

You’re basically leveraging content you’ve already created and using it to build your list. It’s a fantastic strategy. Now remember, just posting an article or a video to your blog or your website only works for nurturing the people that are already on your list. Article marketing is all about leveraging that same content on the web to attract new people to build your list even further.

Here’s the best part. It’s low-cost or really sometimes even no-cost to implement.  It takes very little time to do and it’s very little effort. It’s super, super easy.  Anybody can do it and get started literally right away.

  1. Thank you, this is helpful. I’m wondering, is it ok to post the same content to different article directories?

  2. Thanks so much Derek! I already write a newsletter once a week, and it is empowering to know that I can use my huge library of article to submit to directories. I learned something new today, and I’m getting started right away. WooHoo!!

  3. You rock on these videos Derek! Great info and something to consider–although as a visual artist I would probably have to write new content for the articles. Have a great weekend! Thanks!

  5. Personally, I would LOVE to do more of this but I thought that duplicating your content was bad for seo and that you could get “slapped” by Google for it. I read on SEOmoz (http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/duplicate-content) that we shouldn’t do this because “When duplicate content is present, site owners suffer rankings and
traffic losses and search engines provide less relevant results.” What are your thoughts on this Derek? Should I do it anyway?

    1. See earlier comments but I don’t believe it’s a concern. It’s only when you share / post duplicate content on the same site/platform does it count against you…

  6. Ezine Articles will NOT approve the submission of an article that contains duplicate content. I learned that it is best to submit new content to article sites, get approval, then post it on your site or blog. Do you disagree?

    1. We do it consistently and it works fine. Depends perhaps on the article directories? They are looking for content bottom line and as long as it’s not a duplicate on the same site/platform – it will work fine. It’s just sharing…

  7. What about the Google updates over the past two years? I’ve written more than a thousand articles, but they must all be original content or you’ll get dinged in the search results for your keywords.

    1. @facebook-734129506:disqus – I don’t worry about it. The article directories are looking for content and you’re not re-using the same content on your own site which is definitely a no-no. Thanks for commenting!

  8. What are some of the article directories, how do we find them, for those of us who have not done this before, besides Ezine.com? Thank you.

  9. Hey Derek!

Do you usually “turn” the articles before submitting them to an article marketing site? I heard from someone that if you take what you post on your blog and use it as a guest post or on an article marketing site, then it’s not good for your Google ranking because they don’t like the same content being posted in multiple places.

  10. Thanks! The websites that I use, like WordPress for example, have this sharing setup available. I set mine up so people can share my articles to Twitter, Google, Pinterest, Reddit. !t took me awhile to figure out how to do it-I’m not tech savvy :)

  11. Great Tip! Article MArketing is a very successful seo method to bring you up in the search engines and build your list. It works on auto pilot. 2 articles a week is optimal and minimum 2 article a month. Keyword research is important to ensure the words are not highly competitive or to ensure they are actually searched. Thanks for sharing Derek. As always you are a wealth of information and I love to show my clients and prospects your videos to prove my suggestions work. :) I also suggest not adding the article to your website so you are not penalized for duplicate content. Add it to the article sites only and you can link to the article but do not add the content on your website unless it is slightly different from the one posted on article directories.

  12. Too bad most article directories took such a huge negative hit with the Penguin updates. Because of that I am no longer emphasizing article directories in my own marketing strategy.
