Forgiveness: how to forgive anyone in business

Today, I want to discuss something that’s not often talked about in the context of business: forgiveness.

Now I know, forgiveness probably doesn’t come to mind as a key tool when it comes to scaling a business or boosting impact and income. But forgiveness actually has much more to do with business growth than you may think, and it can play a crucial role in your success.

Here’s what I mean. Maybe you had a business partner, team member, or a client that did something egregious to you. Maybe they took advantage of your ideas or character, left you high and dry, took opportunities or clients from you, or took your ideas?

These experiences can leave deep wounds, and a sense of hurt and betrayal that might get in the way of your business growth. Trust me, I would know – I’ve experienced many of these.

But the thing is, the people and resources you have right now might not be the ones that will help you reach your next big goal. Sometimes, difficult situations occur to push us out of our comfort zones and prepare us for greater things.

Let’s talk about how forgiveness can be used as a tool for personal growth for true business success.

Watch this video to learn about the role of forgiveness in business:

Business issues are blessings in disguise

Here’s the problem: when you feel this sense of hurt or betrayal, it’s really easy to think that something’s wrong with you or that you’re not cut out to be successful in business.

But what I have found is that once we can forgive what happened and get the learning from it on a bigger perspective, we become stronger in our business. Whether it’s a team member, client, business partner, or affiliate, these challenging events are often opportunities in disguise, designed to help us grow.

While it may hurt, the people and the resources that are currently in your life might not necessarily be the ones that are going to take you to that next level in your business. This is why forgiveness is so important – this is about shifting your mindset around hurtful events to see that they are actually blessings in disguise to help you along your success journey.

Now I know, it sounds easier said than done. But while we may want to be bitter or frustrated to protect ourselves, you’ll see in time that forgiveness is such a useful tool for you.

Switching your mindset on forgiveness

So, how do you begin to navigate the waters of forgiveness?

What has been helpful for me in the past is breaking down the word “forgiveness” itself. I did this by looking at the situation and person that caused me these angry feelings and caused me to question myself. And instead of being angry, I would think…

“Thank you for giving me the opportunity to show up differently in my business. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to raise my standards with my affiliates. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to say goodbye to you, client, to say goodbye to you, a team member, because I need somebody else more equipped to take me to the next level. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to realize that I was just staying in my comfort zone.”

Thinking about the situation in this way allows you to imagine the person who caused the hurt as providing you an opportunity to learn and grow, and ultimately become better in your business and within yourself.

Shifting your mentality from “why is this happening to me” to “why is this happening for me” is really the key to avoiding staying tied up in past events, or letting problems allow you to question yourself and your ability.

Integrating forgiveness into your business process

Now, here’s how you might start integrating forgiveness into your business practice:

  1. Start by acknowledging the hurt. Don’t sweep it under the rug. Understand why it affected you deeply and allow yourself to process those emotions.
  2. Look for the lesson in the experience. How has it made you stronger or more aware? What doors might it have opened up? What issues might it have highlighted in your business that you didn’t see before?
  3. Use this insight to shift your perspective from questioning yourself to being excited about the new opportunities for positive change.

Adopting this process allows you to turn pain into power and setbacks into comebacks. Remember, forgiveness isn’t about forgetting or excusing hurtful behavior. It’s about freeing yourself from the chains of resentment and using those experiences to propel you forward.

That’s my process. I hope it works for you.
