Today I want to encourage you to examine your lifestyle and see if you would have intentionally created it this way when you started your business. If you think about the way you’re living today, is it what you envisioned, or do you find that it isn’t quite matching up to what you had in mind?
I’m guessing that you probably didn’t start your business (and then decide to grow it) just to work more hours and have less time off than you would by working for someone else.
Many of the business owners I’ve worked with over the last 20+ years have, unfortunately, found themselves in this exact situation, despite starting their own business so they could have the financial independence and freedom they couldn’t find in a 9-5.
It’s totally understandable that you may not have started your business with the specific intention of creating a Lifestyle Business (one that promotes the lifestyle you want to live). This is exactly what I help entrepreneurs do in the Leverage Program; I show them how to set up their businesses in such a way that they are living the lifestyle they dreamed of when they started.
One of my favorite sayings is “You can have it all, whatever ‘all’ means to you.” (I truly believe you can and are worthy of this!)
For you, “all” could mean more time with your family or friends. For others, it could mean moving across the globe with your family, lots more travel, a vacation home, creating a charitable foundation or living adventurously.
The good news is, how you choose to upgrade your lifestyle through your business is your choice…and it’s absolutely possible. This is what we do.
First, let’s just get a sense of how happy you are with your current lifestyle, without judgment. Just be honest with yourself. (There’s no right or wrong answer. It just is.)
The Lifestyle Business Reality Check:
Pull out your trusted journal and find a place where you can get quiet; remember to be really gentle with yourself. You’ve done such an amazing job to get where you are – and remember, if you’re struggling, the first step towards change is acknowledging what isn’t working.
Here are a few questions to help you evaluate where you are now:
=> When you started your business, did you actually think through the very specific lifestyle that you wanted? What was your intended lifestyle, if you had one?
=> Are you happy with the current lifestyle your business allows you to have? Is it the one you had in mind when you started?
=> Does your business work for YOU, or have you become trapped into working FOR your business?
=> Would you be happy working the way you do now, if ten years from now, you were living the exact same kind of lifestyle?
If you’re not feeling overjoyed with your answers, just know that this is exactly what we help women do in our programs to get them to multiple six figures (and eventually a million or more in their annual revenues), with several weeks of unplugged vacations per year.
